We have opaque flat paint to be applied for the decorative MDF panels in our project. Kindly advice whether we can consider this under the Faux finishing coatings-decorative coatings as per SCAQMD Rule 1113 so that we can have a limit of 350 g/L for the VOC content

Hi Suhas,
There are several specific definitions for Faux Finishing Coatings. Unless your opaque flat meets one of the following - a glaze to create artistic effects, a coating with 48 grams pearlescent pigment, concentrated finely ground pigment, trowel applied coating, or a clear topcoat over a faux finish coating - it's just a flat.

Hello Michelle,
Thank you for your support & valuable advice.
Actually, I checked this with our supplier and got the feedback that they have only emulsion paints with VOC less than 50g/L but it cannot be applied to wood.

Hi Suhas
So if you need to use this product and it doesn't comply with VOC content, you have two options. Can you apply the paint offsite prior to installation? That is the easiest workaround. If not, you can always pursue a VOC budget approach. This would require you to get volumes of other paint/coatings products that you are using. You don't necessarily need to do this for every product in the category but if you focus on the ones that are high volume and much lower VOC than you are allowed, you can than use those "spare VOCs" to cover the extra ones your non-compliant product is using. Good luck.
