Read Heschong and Mahone Group study: Windows and Offices;A Study of Office Worker Performance and the Indoor Environment. Reference and definitions of view factor start after page 40.

Reviewing the H-M study - it looks like the view factor is a quality factor from a given workstation or particular seated position. How is a 'space' supposed to be given a view factor?

Michele, a space is not given a factor. Its the area within that space that offers the occupants at a view factor of 3. For example, a deep space with one window. There will be a distance within that space that the view factor is less than 3. So you then determine that distance and calculate the area. You have to put yourself in the space, or if you have it modeled, to determine where you no longer have that factor. Extreme angles etc.

Hi Todd, I hope to understand view factor. I read the guide and I am concluding that view factor of 3 has to do with the window height and the amount of daylight or distance upto which it can provide views within the indoor space which should be three times the window height, is this understanding correct?
