Richardson Lofts is an adaptive reuse of what was a 6 story jewelry factory built circa 1900 in downtown Newark, NJ, and turned into 67 loft dwelling units. All units are fully accessible and include zero step main entrances, accessible doorways, accessible passages, minimum of one adaptable bathroom, accessible HVAC, lighting controls and outlets, and a kitchen, livable area, adaptable full bathroom and bedroom on the accessible level. The accessible bathrooms are a mix of accessible tubs with showerheads and accessible showers. We have found there is demand for both options and feel it is important to provide variety for our tenants. Clarification as to the shower requirement would be helpful.
Given the nature of loft-style units it was not difficult to incorporate universal design strategies.
