NC-2009 SSc7.1:Heat Island Effect—Non-Roof

Undergroung parking under a 12 inches water pool

Dear all We have the 100% of parking spaces undercover, in an underground parking (level -1). One part of the parking is under a building with vegetated roof and other part under an exterior big pool with 12 inches of water (level 0). I have doubts on how we should approach the parking spaces under the pool. • Do we have to use a high SRI material in the bottom of the pool or paint it in white? What is the SRI of water? • Or being an underground parking we don’t need to use reflective materials? Thanks a lot

Ana, I just tried searching for the SRI of water and was not able to find it. I would suggesting using a high SRI material on the bottom of the pool. If you paint the bottom of the pool white, it does not necessary reflect a high SRI value. I think in order to comply with the credit requirements you do still need to have a high SRI product over the underground parking. Hope this helps.

Hi Ana, How much of your parking is under the pool? You'll get SS7.1 if at least 50% of it is under the building. There is no SRI requirement for parking placed underground, under deck, or under a building. For the 100% ID level, you might want to check LEED Interpretations. I was just looking at heat island non-roof CIRs and noticed one that said water features are excluded (though this was a fountain and not an overparking issue just an onsite SRI issue). It sounds to me like you may have a shot at this, but you might consider a CIR or LI to be sure.

Thanks Michelle and Crissy 100% of our parking is underground and, as you say, there is no SRI requirements for underground parking. So I guess there will be no problem. Anyway, I suppose that a pool serves the intent of the credit (reduce heat islands, cooling the ambience), regardless the SRI. Thanks for your help!

Just chiming in to point out that in LEED HC there is an SRI requirement on the parking deck roofs. I'm posting this since HC projects also read the NC boards.
