We are working on an art gallery project that has tight environmental requirements within the gallery spaces. The design team feel it is impossible to give occupants of the gallery any control over the thermal conditions within the space as it could negatively affect the exhibited items which would go against the purpose of the space. However, the IEQ space matrix suggests that gallery areas must comply with the credit requirements for IEQc7.2 if this credit is targeted. Other spaces within the building including offices, teaching spaces will meet the credit requirements. Please could we have some clarification if gallery spaces with tight environmental requirements can be exempt from complying with the credit requirements.

Hi Margaret,
I think you might need to do a project specific CIR to get an official ruling on this one, especially because the IEQ space matrix says to include these spaces. I have seen LEED provide guidance for allowing certain gallery spaces to be exempt from the daylight and views credits, but couldn't find a reference for that happening for thermal comfort. However, if I were writing a CIR I might reference these other instances like daylight and views when making my case to the USGBC/GBCI.
Another quick tip: you could try searching the LEEDuser site for gallery space and see what kinds of guidance and advice has come up over the years around this topic.
Good luck!
