Hi Cora, the earlier versions of LEED used to include a recommendations based on project square footage (e.g. 82 SF minimum for projects 0-5,000 SF, 125 SF for 5,001-15,000 SF, etc.). Version 4 eliminated that guidance and they now look to the design team to demonstrate that the space provided is adequately sized by describing the expected volume generated by occupants and the frequency of pick-up. Depending on the project type, you might be able to get recommendations from facilities staff, housekeeping, or the planned recycling services provider. I hadn't encountered this previously, but we literally just got it in the preliminary review comments on a higher education project where we sized the recycling areas in the building based on guidance from their in-house recycling program, so we plan to respond with the information they provide regarding adequacy of space based on their assumed volume and pick-up frequency. I'm curious if anyone else in the forum has tips/suggestions?

Thank you for your response Jim.
Also, do you know if its a requirement for the room to be located next to the exterior wall. With our storage area, people have access in and out and have a straight path to the exterior but our room is not located beside the exterior wall....hope that makes sense!

I have not encountered any requirements or review comments regarding location of recycling storage and collection area(s). We typically try to provide multiple spaces, (e.g. paper recycling bins at each work station, recycling stations on each floor, and a storage area in the loading dock or adjacent to a trash dumpster pad, with locations noted and square footages tallied on a recycling plan).
