If I am working on a CI project where the tenant project space is two floors in a high rise. And those two floors are connected by a stairwell designed with such active features, would that satisfy the intent of the credit? When people enter the project space, they are encouraged to use the stairs to go from the lobby of the space to their office or from their office to conference rooms or meetings in other offices. But the stairwell does not go from the building lobby to the tenant space (which is 22 floors up).

Hi Crista,
We have a similar project where the ground floor of the building is not part of the project scope, but we do have a few consecutive floors and are adding interconnecting stairs between them. Our approach is to identify the main floor (where the reception area will be) as our ‘lobby’, or entrance floor, for the purposes of this credit. Naturally we can’t expect tenants to climb the stairs to the 22nd floor, but we are using the different design strategies to encourage them to take the stairs between the office floors. We haven’t submitted the project yet so I can’t vouch for its success, but I do believe this approach meets the intent of encouraging daily physical activity through active circulation.

Lee,
I agree with your interpretation of an interconnecting stair between floors within a tenant space for a Commercial Interiors project. It seems to fit with the general approach that LEED takes to CI of addressing elements within the scope of the tenant space.

Dear Lee,
we are facing a similar situation at a Commercial Interiors project and I would like to know if USGBC has approved your approach of "identify the main floor (where the reception area will be) as our ‘lobby’, or entrance floor, for the purposes of this credit."?
Thanks in advance!
