We are working on a major renovation project that contains several split system AC units which will be replaced. The owner doesn't have any record of the refrigerant volume that was charged for these units. is there any guidance for how we calculate (or estimate) the refrigerant charge per ton for this equipment?

Hi Charles, if your project is going to get rid of some old AC units, you just need to verify that the new equipment meets the credit requirements.

Hi Charles,
Total refrigerant weight is total from the refrigerant inside the equipment itself (standard charged from manufacturer) and additional refrigerant charged depends to the length of refrigerant piping from indoor unit to condensing unit (usually will be charged on site).
For the refrigerant weight from manufacturer, you can check the condensing unit model from the CU nameplate and then ask the AC vendor for the data.
Following is an example to calculate the refrigerant weight based on piping length from DuPont refrigeration piping handbook (please kindly refer to page 11 -17)
