EBOM-2009 MRc7:Solid Waste Management—Ongoing Consumables

Single-Use Batteries

Has anyone been successful at or read any LEED Interpretations/ Updates that allow single-use batteries to be exempt from the battery portion of this credit? I heard through the grapevine this might be possible but cannot find any supporting documents or discussions. Thanks!

Hi Sara, I haven't heard of this. Single-use batteries contain heavy metals and recyclable materials so I can't see USGBC/GBCI exempting them from the credit.

Sara, Batteries fall under 'toxic waste' so you will need to follow those rules....which means 'responsible disposal or recycling'. We've always found that the added weight of the batteries has helped most clients achieve recycling numbers.
