I am working on two projects which will be certified separately. They are located next to each other and they share waste area and waste bins. Is it acceptable to divide the total waste volume from the buildings based on the square footage of each building?

My understanding is that you can submit the total combined waste if both buildings have the same LEED performance period, the same owner, and the same waste hauler. This is based on the Group Certification instruction in the LEED Campus Guidance document (and would apply even though you're not doing a formal "group" certification if you meet the items noted above). You can access the guidance at https://www.usgbc.org/resources/leed-campus-guidance. If your buildings will have different performance periods, you'll need to document each one separately and I don't believe a square foot weighted average would be accepted.
