Option 2, path 4 – LCA. “….and incorporate reuse and/or salvage materials into the project’s structure and enclosure….”. We have done so much for our building and have lots of recycled material in the structure and enclosure, as well as reused materials in floors, acoustic ceilings, and wooden terraces. We have between 33 and 52 % savings in the six categories. But does this mean we can’t take the fourth point because our reused materials are not in the structure or enclosure? Talk about counter productive credit!
Any ideas on how to get the fourth point? It says no minimum of materials that must be reused. Could we incorporate one brick (it is NOT a brick building) somewhere just for the sake of that sentence? What do you think?

Hello Maria,
There appears to be very little guidance regarding the reuse and/or salvage materials into the structure of the project and enclosure for the whole building lifecycle analysis. How you documented reuse materials between the baseline and proposed building? Were the same materials used in both baseline and proposed building? Also, appears that some interior finishes can be included if a proper explanation for inlcuding finishing materials. Were you able to achieve the 4th fourth point?

Hi Bipin!
I have submitted the project for review, so it is unclear how it will go.
How do you mean that we could include interior finishes? Into the building and account for them in the calculation you mean? I am stuck on the sentence “…and incorporate reuse and/or salvage materials into the project’s structure and enclosure for the proposed design”.
/Maria

Hello Maria,
The LEED v4 BD+C Reference Guide states interior finishes can be included if a proper explanation for inlcuding finishing materials. I was pointing towards this. Could you update once you hear back from the review. Thanks!

Hi Maria,
We have a project, where we are using reused materials in the patition-walls. We are also a bit stuck on the sentence “…and incorporate reuse and/or salvage materials into the project’s structure and enclosure for the proposed design”. So I am curious to know how your porject was reviewed?

Martin,
We lost the fourth point (in a platinum project, we really needed it). The first review said:
“2. It is unclear whether the project incorporated building reuse and/or salvaged materials as a part of the proposed structure or enclosure design. Strategies that offset significant amounts of embodied GWP include reuse of foundations, concrete structures, metal systems, and other high-impact structural materials. Reuse elements may be from on-site or off-site, and should be modeled following guidelines for small scale reuse (see Further Explanation, Small Scale Reuse in LEED v4), these guidelines should also be used for large scale reuse incorporation in Path 4 for LEED v4.1. Using steel and aluminum scrap and reducing the amount of cement in the concrete are not considered as incorporating building reuse and/or salvaged materials as a part of the proposed structure or enclosure design.”
