We have receipts for 238 wooden pallets which were returned. I am trying to decipher if these can be considered diverted material as the alternative here is to take them to the landfill. However, we haven't been given a weight but, that wouldn't be to hard to find out. Has anyone else been successful in claiming these this way? Or, is there another way they can be utilized for credit?

Lisa - Sorry for my tardy reply. I was away from all communications while on vacation.
I haven't had your exact situation before but it appears that you can count these pallets as diverted since they otherwise would have been landfilled... It sounds like you are doing your calculations by weight and hence only need the weight to calculate the overall contribution to diversion from the landfill. Combined with your receipts for the pallets return, the weight calculation would make a complete set of backup if the reviewer questioned your approach. Way to go on going the extra mile for diversion!

Thank you so much Michelle. Great to know. I will include these in our calculations.

Hi Michelle,
I have a similar situation in which some of the materials are not returned but sold or given away to be used in other smaller works such as self-construction of poor houses, or else for auctioning (such as large quantities of scrap steel or demolition steel).
Is it possible to calculate the weight in money instead of weight or volume?

Francisco - this credit is measured in the amount of material diverted - either by weight or by volume. While it is laudable to divert valuable usable materials from the landfill, it is necessary to back that up with information on how much quantity was diverted. I would suggest seeing if your steel supplier can help you estimate the weight. And hopefully you've been estimating the volume that has already left the site.

Then, based on your answer, can only be presented in weight or volume ... but could be transferred from money to weight or volume, considering that the materials have different prices?
Or do you definitely discard the possibility of making that equivalence and only consider weight or volume?

Francisco - The money that is received for diverting materials has no bearing on this credit's calculations.
To answer you question directly, yes - you need to definitely disregard the possibility of making that equivalence.
