NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

only automatic control in offices for lights

Can the lighting control in offices be automatic (daylighting + occupancy sensors) only? I mean, without manual control?

Best Regards

Do any ASHRAE 90.1-2010 mandatory provisions require manual control if occupancy and daylight controls are present?

Hello, I think they don't. I read "Each manual device shall be readily accessible and located so the occupants can see the controlled lighting" but I think the manual control is not mandatory.

If it is not required in the mandatory provisions, it is not required. As far as the energy model is concerned the lighting runs on a schedule so the switches don't impact anything.

Dear Marcus, I have a follow up question. If we only have automatic lighting control (daylighting + occupancy sensors only) in open office space does this also comply with the requirement of section 9.4.1.2a: "a. The controlled lighting shall have at least one control step between 30 % and 70 % (inclusive) of full lighting power in addition to all off"? Can daylighting sensors which are dimming the lights automatically count as one control step between 30 and 70% or do we have to add a manual switch which will e.g. turn on a few fixtures which result in 30-70% of lighting power?

Yes the dimming will count as the required step control.
