- Options for shade or indirect sun are provided, with at least one seating space per 200 square feet (18.5 square meters) of each respite area, with one wheelchair space per five seating spaces.
Question : Is the wheelchair space included in the total seating spaces, or it's additional ? For example, a 200 m2 space would need 200 / 18,5 = 11 seating spaces. If we need one wheelchair space per five seating spaces, that means 3 wheelchair spaces (rounding up). So.. is it 8 regular seating spaces + 3 wheelchair spaces OR 11 regular seating spaces + 3 wheelchair spaces ?

Ditto! Perhaps in posting the question on a yearly basis, eventually an answer will come ;-)

Actually, I ended up submitting this credit for review and we had enough room to go with the worst-case scenario. I'm not saying that's the way it needs to be though. I'll send out the question to LEED Coach, and post it when they reply, so we know for next time !

I sent the question to GBCI Canada. Here is their response:
The project team is inquiring about SSc Places of Respite, and how to calculate the number of wheelchair spaces.
The requirements section indicates “the areas must meet the following requirements…. With Options for shade
or indirect sun are provided, with at least one seating space per 200 square feet (18.5 square meters) of each
respite area, with one wheelchair space per five seating spaces.
The further explanation section clarifies that “For each 200 square feet (18 square meters) of respite area, at
least one seating space and one wheelchair space for every five seating spaces are placed in shade or
indirect sunlight….”
And the submittal tips indicate: “Ensure that at least one seating space for each 200 square feet (18 square
meters) of required respite area is placed in shade or indirect sunlight. Also ensure that one wheelchair space
for every five seating spaces is placed in shade or indirect sunlight.
So if the project requires 11 regular seating spaces, then the project team requires 3 wheelchair spaces are in
addition to the 11 regular spaces.

Hi Priscillia, may I ask how you documentated/demonstrated the shaded piece of the requirement?

We showed the tree canopy and we also had covered spaces (with a roof or under a soffit). We showed a site plan with those shaded areas and seating within those areas.
