Hi, we are looking at LEEDv4 CI for a project in London. By UK law it is not permitted to smoke inside office buildings, and the floors of the office building we look to certify are for more than 25ft away from any building entrances and air intakes.
The credit language is 'Signage must be posted within 10 feet (3 meters) of all building entrances indicating the no-smoking policy.'. For CI projects am I correct in assuming that the 'building entrance' is the entrance to the assessed spaces? And do we really need signage since smoking within 25ft of our assessment spaces is prohibited by law?

Hi Meike, the signage is intended to notify occupants/visitors about the exterior smoking policy (e.g. no smoking within 25 feet of building entrances). So for CI projects, the base building needs to have compliant signage at all ground floor entrances, regardless of where the CI project is located within the building. This is probably something you'll have to work out with the building owner, but hopefully it's not too hard to sell given that preventing smoke infiltration is kind of a no-brainer for IAQ and occupant health.

Hi Trista, thanks for your reply. I since found out that there is an alternative compliance path, in line with Interpretation #10435 which states that 'If the landlord is unwilling to post signage within 10 feet (3 meters) of all building entrances, the project may alternatively post signage at the entrance to the project (tenant) space. The project must demonstrate that a request to have exterior signage posted at all building entrances was made and the landlord refused to accommodate the request.'
