NC-2009 MRc6: Rapidly Renewable Materials
Our team has asked the question if both MRc6 and MRc7 can both be entered together for credits. The project has FSC certified wood throughout the project and for MRc6 the FSC Certified Wood materials are 2.7% of the materials budget which would qualify for 1-point. Concerning MRc7 the calculations shows 99.6% certified wood credits which earns 1-point. Does our building qualify for 2-points on these credits?

How does this credit treat materials that come from animals such as wool or leather?
What building components are typically purchased with FSC content to earn this credit?
Does FSC-certified wood automatically contribute to IEQc4.4 as a low-emitting material?
Does FSC-certified bamboo products count towards this credit?
Should wood used on site features such as benches or a gazebo be included here?
Is there a minimum quantity of wood that must be used on the project to qualify for this credit?

Hi Richard,
Please take a look at LEEDuser's Viewpoint on this credit (MRc6). You'll see that wood materials are excluded from contributing to the credit; they're not considered RAPIDLY renewable, just renewable. So that FSC wood just contributes to MRc7.

I wanted to mention that I've read USGBC docs which mention some wood is considered rapidly renewable but would need documentation from harvester. ie. Aspen and Poplar. However on our project we found that the poplar growing cycle exceeded 10 years.

I guess i should have also said some products could be both FSC certified (or % partially) AND rapidly renewable (or partial%) such as:

Whether or not Tectum's Aspen is considered "rapidly renewable" per LEED based on the statement on the doc at link above is not quite clear. I'd call mfgr for a confirmation of 10 yr harvest cycle.
