We are an FSC-certified (brand new) casework manufacturer. We are submitting our very first FSC job. This job is also a LEED project.
I am confused about how MR4 relates to, or is in conflict with MR7 credits.
Is it true that if I try to submit our work under MR4 then it cannot contribute also to MR7?
Since this project will utilize 100% of FSC-certified materials - laminates and wood substrates, am I better off presenting our product under MR7?
Thanks!
John

Hi John, MRc4 has changed dramatically in the new v4 rating system, and FSC alone won't win credit under any of its options.Under the 2009 version, which projects can still register under (and which I'm guessing your project is actually pursuing), FSC is applicable to both MRc4 and MRc7, but there is no overlap in the credits because MRc7 counts only new wood, and MRc4 counts recycled content. So for example, products with FSC Mix and recycled content claims can be counted under MRc4 but you can't count them again for MRc7. LEED Interpretation #10372 clarifies that these products must go into an FSC "bucket" or into a recycled-content "bucket" for your reference!

Thanks, Candace, so, what you're saying is that NOTHING that has recycled wood can make a claim to MRc7?

Right, in the 2009 system, "FSC recycled" products can ONLY count toward MRc4. "FSC Mix" may count toward MRc4 or MRc7, but not both.
