Hello,
My project is pursing Case 2 for residential projects since it has less than 10% of retail space. I understand that a mix of infrastructure programs are required to support ride sharing, but is there a min. number of carpool spaces requried for this requirement?
Thanks,
Sara

I have the same question! We plan to meet the Credit via Case 2, Option 1.
The "infrastructure and support" requirement is incredibly vague -- there are no quantity requirements listed at all. I see the discussions from March 14th and May 6, 2011 below, and the reference under Bird's Eye View to CIR #3137, but still have questions, and CIR #3137 does not seem to quite apply here, if a project is using Case 2 Option 1.
Would a mix of the listed examples (e.g., 2 car/vanpool drop-off spaces, a 2-year zipcar contract for 2% of the FTE, and a ride board) be acceptable? For a residential building, drop-off/pick-up areas seem more appropriate than designated parking for car/vanpools.
CIR #3137 requires zipcars for 5% of the occupants. SSc4.3, Option 4 requires zipcars for 3% of the FTE. And both require preferred spaces and a 2-year contract. However, both these options are "stand-alone", meaning there is no "second part" of the respective Option that must be met, whereas SSc4.4 Case 2, Option 1 is a 2-part requirement. Therefore, I would think we could provide fewer zipcars (perhaps 2%) along with the reduced parking capacity and a mix of other strategies such as the pick-up/drop/off areas and a rideshare bulletin board.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

LEED Interpretations 1444 and 518 both apply. You will need to use the ITE as the basis of your program to facilitate shared vehicle use. There is a lot of information included in the LI's regarding approach, etc. as they have basically set precedence for this credit.

This wasn't really helpful, I'm still unclear as to the number of support programs you would have to do, is it enough to provide Carpool drop off area and a ride board? do we need to do more to satifsfy the intent of the credit? where does it say that a mix of programs is required?

Following up on this post, as it has been 2.5 years with no real response, and we're still working on this project!
Does anyone know what the LEED reviewers are requiring in terms of the number of support programs provided? There are several listed in the credit requirements (carpool drop-off, parking for vanpools, car-share, ride boards and shuttle services), but these read as "suggested" rather than "requried". I assume they are definitely not requiring ALL of those, and those are really addressed under other SSc4 credits.
I've read CIRs 518 and 1444, but neither of these address how far the owner must go in providing support. Any experiential advice would be appreciated!

Hi All,
I cannot speak to an official ruling about this, but can provide some guidance based on what we've done on past projects that has been accepted by GBCI. Basically, GBCI wants to see that the project is meeting the intent of the credit by providing resources for residents reduce the use of SOVs. To demonstrate this we usually choose 2-3 strategies to implement out of the several they list in the Reference Guide.
For example our most recent residential project provided 2 carpool spaces, alternative transit information in the lobby, and a ride-share board on the tenant portal.
If the strategies chosen are comprehensive enough to demonstrate the intent, it should pass the LEED test.
I hope this helps!

Hi all! I worked with this credit a lot as a LEED reviewer, and Kimberly's example is great. My advice to other reviewers on what to look for here (because the requirement was as vague to us as it was to project teams!) was one physical improvement (like a carpool space or drop-off lane) and one programmatic thing (like a rideshare board, guaranteed ride home program, transit info, etc). If physical improvements aren't an option on your site, I'd recommend stacking up more programmatic things to compensate.
The ND credit Transportation Demand Management has some good ideas as well, though those are above and beyond what would be expected of a single building.
