Hello,
We are certifying the Terminal Building in a new international airport. We wonder how to categorize the project, since lighting zones are not well defined. A Terminal Building needs maximum iluminance because it will register a high nighttime activity, and also to ensure safety during the airplane's approach to the passengers boarding bridge.
May we assume that the Terminal Building is an LZ3?
Thank you,

In my personal opinion, I think that LZ3 would be a reasonable choice

Hi Gustavo,
Based on MLO lighting zone definition and recommendation uses that is stated on LEED BD+C v4 guide page 214, the LZ3 is the closest lighting zone for terminal building based on recommendation area, as it will register a high nighttime activity as you stated above. LZ4 is not suitable, because it is more used for extremely unusual installations such as high-density entertainment districts and heavy industrial uses and currently only Times Square has this classification in the U.S.
Justification for the lighting zone chosen may be required for LEED submission as supporting document.
