There are some applications, such as LPG (liquid petroleum gas) or diesel-fueled systems in remote locations, where you need to utilize combustion devices (stationary engines, boilers, etc) that do not meet this LEED credit for emissions. Available resources and one’s environment can greatly limit the range of options available and cleaner-burning fuel may not be available. For projects that need to use these devices, an additional particulate matter filter can be utilized to decrease the contaminates in the exhaust system. Is there a way to apply for this credit if a filter is incorporated into the exhaust system? Would this have to be a field test, or can one submit applicable documentation from the manufacturer(s) to prove compliance for this credit?

I am also curious to know if a particulate filter can be used to meet these credit requirements, and if so what the documentation requirements would be. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions as to the necessary documentation?

We have worked on several projects in Canada where it is not uncommon for some types of equipment to have high emissions such as emergency generators that are fuelled by diesel. By having an integrated project team that pursues this credit early in design has allowed the project team to reach out to manufacturers early enough to come up with a compliant design. Sometimes this has been as simple as using a different manufacturer or more complicated such as changing the type of fuel from diesel to natural gas or even substantially changing the mechanical design and type of equipment used in the building.

I am curious to know if anyone has submitted a project with an additional particulate matter filter to decrease contaminates in the exhaust system as Amanda - the original poster - was proposing. If so, what was the result?

Our team has a project outside the EEUU, and we intend to apply this pilot credit, and with the measurements obtained from the generating set, in order to credit the maximum rate allowed for emergency equipment (stand-by) are met. Has anyone managed to obtain the score on this credit?
