Pilot-Credits MRpc103:Integrative Analysis of Building Materials

Integrative Analysis of Building Materials- Work Smarter, Not Harder

This pilot credit is a useful way to both qualitatively and quantitatively examine the human health implications, environmental impacts, and safety impacts of building materials.

We’ve found it helpful during this project and previous projects to keep a list of products that we have documented for this pilot credit in the past to reference. It is essential to choose products from larger brands that have plenty of research available. The smaller brands will prove to be difficult to find things like Global Warming Potential or Ozone Depletion Potential.

As others have noted, Sherwin Williams has a chart available for many of their products which basically lays out the exact requirements of the spreadsheet needed for this pilot credit. This saves time vs. other products that require more thorough research. I am hopeful that as this credit gains more traction, other companies will follow in their footsteps, and this information will be more readily available for projects in the future.

Agreed, Marina. We were able to utilize the Sherwin Williams chart on their webpage for this project and reference at least one product we had previously documented. Knowing where to find resources is another factor for working smarter, not harder. We opted to utilize Ecomedes to find EPDs, HPDs, and low-emission certifications and the product websites for SDS/CSRs.

I agree, our team has created a list of products of those previously compliant with the credit, of course there are variations between project types and applications, but its helpful to know larger manufacturers might have more product research available to present information options to the project team.

Our team has a running list of products that meet EPD & MIR option 1 or option 2 criteria, in addition to Low Emitting Materials. We feel that the option 2 products are worth reviewing for the integrative analysis of building materials. We ran into a few issues where products we wanted to evaluate did not go through a full analysis because they were missing an EPD or MIR. In these instances it was more difficult to create an through analysis. This was espeically an interesting excerise for flooring products, and paints and coatings. My additional recommendation to this forum is to analyze materials that will have the most SF applied to the project or cost.

We also keep a list of products that we have analyzed for this credit. Many of our projects use the same studs, insulation, gypsum board, acoustic ceiling panels, and paint that have already been analyzed. It would be interesting to focus on some interior adhesives and sealants, though potentially a small quantity, could have more of an impact on human health depending on their installation location (and if re-application is necessary through the life of the fit-out).

Yes we also keep track of which materials we have analyzed. The credit does not require analysis of two similar products , so we have randomly chosen products to analyze. Over the course of time, this is building a product research database for our firm which may even be used later for comparing two similar products based on their potential health impact. Comparative analysis is helpful especially if it is an interior finish products.

I agree, keeping a running list of products we’ve already analyzed has been a huge time-saver for us too. It not only makes the pilot credit easier to manage, but over time it’s turning into a really useful database we can look back on.
