Hi!
My project is a large building hosuing a combination of diverse spaces -- office/conference/industrial/lab. This credit is realatively straightforward for the office, lab, and conference spaces. However, I am not sure how to apply the credit to the industrial spaces. (I have read through the warehouse questions but my industrial spaces are quite different than the warehouse situations.)
Does anyone have experience applying this credit to assembly-line type spaces? Would these kinds of spaces be excused from the requirement? I don't think the assembly-line workers would exactly have the time to fiddle with individual task lights...
What about workshop environments where one person is standing and using heavy machinery? If that piece of machinery has a light incorporated into it, can that count as task lighting? If the machine does not have a light incorporated into it, would the credit require additional lighting at that workstation or would this type of workstation be excluded?
The industrial portion of the building accounts for roughly half the building's occupants.

Hi Raina,
There isn't some hard and fast rules here so far as I know. I will try to look into it and get back to you though. I assume you've taken a look at the IEQ Space Matrix and haven't found clear guidance there?

Hi!
I hadn't seen the matrix but now I have checked it out--thanks for the tip. It is still a little nebulous, but the matrix does spell out that "Component manufacturing" and "Fine assembly or benchwork" and "Motor and equipment observation" all require individual control. I'm not sure if the industiral activities in my project fit those descriptions or not--must learn a bit more about what they will actually be doing every day.

Hi Raina, Lauren is correct, there are not detailed requirements for applying this credit to industrial spaces. This means you have some flexibility with meeting the credit requirements, but make sure to explain and justify any decisions in your submittal information so it is clear to the certification reviewer.
The assembly-line spaces should not be excluded from the requirements. For those spaces, my recommendation is to determine what is the most appropriate lighting to suit the needs and preferences of the occupants in the space. This might mean finding a way to provide individual lighting controls or it could make sense to provide shared lighting controls.
As for the workshop environments, yes, machinery with lighting incorporated into the equipment could be considered an individual lighting control. Again, the workshop spaces should not be excluded from the requirements.
