How long after a project is completed can credits be submitted?

If a new construction project is already registered in LEED online, can the credit submittal process begin after the building has been completed? And how much longer after the project has been completed?

The client is looking for additional funding to afford adding features that would potentially earn additional credits, but if they are able to obtain funding, it could possibly be a few years down the road.
