Sloan has a new "hybrid" urinal that is basically waterless but does a pre-programmed, 1 gallon system flush every 72 hours. This solves a lot of maintenance and odor problems. However, how does the USGBC want us to calculate water use? Still Zero? When you account for reduced maintenance, it might be a "wash" so to speak.........

Hi Susan,
It is my understanding that for now, hybrid urinals that use less than 150 gallons annually for automated maintenance flushing (such as the Sloan model referenced) can be considered waterless urinals in LEED calculations and listed as 0 gpf in the design case given the negligible usage.
Hope this helps!

Has there been an update on defining hybrid urinals as waterless since 2016?
As it pertains to LEEDv4 and WaterSense requirements, would a waterless urinal be exempt from these requirements? Thank you.

Yes - see LEED interpretation 10459.
Waterless and hybrid urinals are not regulated by WaterSense, so I assume they're treated like any other fixture that's not certifiable and exempted.
