has anyone ever successfully argued that sinks in gym locker rooms are more akin to "private" fixtures? Folks do all sorts of things other than wash their hands in there. I've seen people brush their teeth, wash their face, even hair. Any thoughts on this? I understand the safest route is to consider it private but I'm not sure if it could be argued that this is used more like a private-use fixture?

Hi Kathryn,
I think you make a good argument to consider gym sinks as private fixtures for this particular situation. It sounds like the baseline flow rate for public lavatories would be inappropriate given how often people use them for things like shaving and face washing. I imagine if you put 0.5 GPM aerators in you’d get some pretty significant user dissatisfaction. My best advice is to clearly make your case in the documentation but have a backup plan ready in case GBCI decides not to accept it.

The same can likely be said of the regular restrooms where showers are present, but these are public fixtures. The language has been modified to fairly clearly identify private fixtures as hotel room sinks, residential sinks, and prison cell sinks only.
