Hi All,
It is noted in the guidebook that "Projects that achieve a density of 1.5 floor-area ratio may include vegetated roof surfaces in this calculation if the plants are native or adapted, provide habitat, and promote biodiversity."
My question 1 is, do the soil for the green roof planting need to fulfill the restored soil requirement?
-------------------
As per LEED Interpretation #10231 which is applicable for v2009, "To satisfy the intent of the credit, the vegetated roof must be an intensive roof system, where the depth of the growing medium is 6 inches or more."
My question 2 is, is it still valid for LEED v4?
-------------------
As per LEED Interpretation #5310 which is applicable for v2009, living walls or vertical landscaping does not contribute to the credits SSc5.1.
My question 3 is, is it still valid for LEED v4?
Thanks in advanced for your response.

Hi Yoyo, I don't believe the roof soil needs to meet the restored soil requirement since really it should be specially designed to support the plant species selected for the roof. There's no roof depth requirement for v4 - an intensive or extensive roof can achieve the credit. I think LI 5310 would still be applicable to v4 unless stated otherwise in the v4 Reference Guide. You could send the question to USGBC/GBCI for clarification.
