Hello,
We want to apply for the Green Power and Carbon Offset credits under LEED v4 BD+C New Construction & Major renovation project.
The credit description states that the owner must engage in a minimum of 5 years contract with certified renewable electricity provider conforming to Europe ACP Guarantees of Origin (GOs) certification.
The tendering procedure and contracting for green power procurement according to legal requirements is ONLY valid for shorter periods in the EU and Hungary.
The Owner is committed to procure green power for a long period, even more than 5 years, however the contract's renewal for green power procurement will be annually.
Can we apply for the credit if the Owner submits a valid signed letter of commitment indicating that the project will continue to renew the renewable contract or engage in an alternate renewable energy contract for more than 5 years ?
Can we pursue the credit under these circumstances?
Thank You in advance.

You do have the option of purchasing the green power/offsets all up front to cover the 5 year timeframe.

Dear Marcus,
Thanks for the reply.
Unfourtunately the case is annual renewal for annual green power purchase contract.
Can we apply and get the credit if the Owner submits a valid signed letter of commitment indicating that the project will continue to renew the renewable contract for minimum 5 years?
Thanks in advance!

The LEED v4 Reference Guides (refer to Required Documentation section) indicate that the required documentation is either a purchase contract or letter of commitment showing REC, green power, or carbon offsets for targeted point threshold. Therefore, the projects could provide the contracts that they have and then provide an owner letter of commitment to the remaining green power and/or carbon offsets.
