NC-v4 EQc1:Enhanced indoor air quality strategies

Exemption for workshop spaces?

We are doing a building where half the building is offices and the other half is workshops for parks maintenence staff. (I'm talking mechanical, carpentry, tree crew). These rooms have 2 Hollow Metal doors and one roll-up door each. Is there any way to argue that only the office half of the building needs these measures? I can't imagine MERV 13 and sawdust are a good combo.

I was planning on putting a walk-off mat at the door between the workshops and the offices.

HI Adrienne, did you make a call on the above in the end and how did the project go? I'm working on a manufacturing facility that includes a mixture office type spaces, as well as production facilities and stores. I'm currently trying to define the scope of 'occupied' spaces that require privacy and am wonder if I can descope cleanroom areas, workshops etc?

My team and I are still discussing this, but we are not putting walk off mats in the workshopsbecause it doesn't make sense. I'm not sure if we'll apply for an official ruling or write a narrative explaining our decision and hope it is accepted. Any recommendations on this would be helpful.

You could try to sub in the Warehouse and Distribution Center rating system variation in this instance. Loading docks, garages, maintenance shops do not require entryway systems rather entryway systems from these spaces into adjacent spaces (typically office areas) would require entryway systems. My guess is that GBCI reviewers would be receptive to this approach.

Thanks Dave, Have you ever substituted in a rating system variation? How does that work?

Yes, I have done this before with success.  provide justification on how the other rating system's credit requirements is more applicable on your particular project. upload documents that demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the other rating system's credit. My opinion is that workshops are very similar to warehouses and GBCI will most likely accept this approach.  Good Luck!
