Our Project Team would like to confirm if EPDs can be listed in the MR Calculator multiple times for slag and Portland Cement when used in multiple concrete mixes with different performance characteristics? For example, concrete mixes in locations to represent 1. concrete mix for a transportation guideway, 2. site concrete for paving, and 3. structural building concrete. In all three mix designs, the slag and Portland cement are arguably unique products. Thoughts?

Hi Linda,
if it is the same cement mixed on site in different concretes, I actually don´t think it can be counted as different products. For example, I would not count wall tiles that are used in both the bathroom and the kitchen as different products.
For different cements the manufacturers need to be recognized as a participant in the industry-wide EPD, but each zement could count as one product in my understanding.
A product in terms of the credit language is "the unit of purchase", so if the concrete is not mixed on site, the cement EPD will probably not be accepted at all.

Our take is that if it is a different mix design, then it can be used multiple times. If you look at the Industry Wide EPD, it has vairous concrete PSI and slag %. They serve different purposes, and are different design mixes, even if they are the same components. So a 4000 psi would could, as would a 3000 PSI. They are different products, whereas a tile used on the floor and the wall is the exact same product, these are different.
Similiar to carpet, they allow for different pile heights to count as separate products because they serve different types of foot traffic.

Thank you Tommy for confirming our approach / understanding of the credit intent. I will let the forum know how GBCI reacts and if they request clarifications during the construction submission, however this will be some time from now!
