Entryway System

entryway systems apply to all regularly used building entrances. per the LEED Glossary (https://www.usgbc.org/glossary#letterr) REGULALRY USED EXTERIOR ENTRANCE is a frequently used means of gaining access to a building. Examples include the main building entrance as well as any building entryways attached to parking structures, underground parking garages, underground pathways, or outside spaces. Atypical entrances, emergency exits, atriums, connections between concourses, and interior spaces are not included. Hope this helps!

https://www.usgbc.org/leedaddenda/100001839 This addenda notes that if an entrance is defined as regularly used, then it would probably need an entryway system. A few years back I worked on an office building that had an outdoor terrace when employees could take a break. You could not leave the building or site from the terrace...and would be required to re-enter the building to leave the building. I tried to argue (errr...i mean "influence") the reviewer that an entryway system was not required at the entrance to the terrace, but I lost this one. Here is the GBCI comment: "provided floor plans do not indicate that permanent entryway systems have been installed at the entrances to the Terrace Function Space 111T" My guess is that if an outdoor patio is regularly used for breaks, then an entryway system will be required. On the flip side, entrances to private offices are excluded from the entryway sysytem requirement....and least they were allowed to be excluded when I authored both a LEED EB v3 & v4 Volume prototypes.  Best of Luck! 

I just wanted to let you know that I had a nursing home with a terrace from the dining and socializing area, that the reviewer thought I should include. But I referred to the glossary and described how the terrace is more used to go outside for a coffee in fair weather and come back in again and is not a “Regularly used exterior entrance a frequently used means of gaining access to a building.” It is not the way you go when you want to enter the building. And I got the point. /Maria
