Pilot-Credits EQpc44:Ergonomics approach for computer users

Design or Construction Phase?

Reviewing the credit requirements, I thought that this should be submitted at the Construction phase. However, the Infographic (https://www.usgbc.org/sites/default/files/Ergonomics%20infographic_LEEDpc44%20BDC.pdf) suggests that the credit needs to be submitted before occupancy, which means it is submitted at the Design Phase.

When have you submitted the credit?

Hi Allison, I hadn't seen that infographic before, its very useful. I think that the credit specific requirements to engage an ergonomist, and for the owner to develop and ergonomics strategy make this a design stage credit (https://www.usgbc.org/node/4631863?return=/pilotcredits/Commercial-Interiors/v4). I was fortunate on one project to discover that the owner already had a really comprehensive ergonomics strategy at corporate level, and I was able to use this to demonstrate the required commitment. I submitted the credit at design stage.

Tony -  I ended up reaching out to LEED Coach -  The infographic is slightly misleading. The intent for the pilot credit is to engage the ergonomist/specialist in the schematic or conceptual design phase. During the pilot, the timing of actual credit implementation and review submission is flexible.  I work on many BD+C projects where construction takes over 2 years. The credit has requirements during SD and for move-in, if a project had to submit at the Design Phase, it would lose significant time to develop an education program and to complete the credit requirements.

We submitted this credit for construction submittal. Even though the credit mentions the design phase, there are a lot of components that actually materialize during purchasing and the design submittal is usually done before it.

Our experience has been the same for our project, and others like it. You can't really complete the documentation needed on the Design Review schedule. It happens too late in the project. But starting ahead of time in the Design Phase is the best approach. It usually takes some time to get the procurement team on board...
