We are currently working on a school project that will be completed in several phases. An existing school is located on the project site and will be occupied until the new building is constructed. Afterwards, the existing school will be demolished in order to develop the site (bus drop-off, sports fields for the school's student and landcape development). We think that the existing school must be included in the LEED limit since the future development will support the normal operation of the project. And we we will need to included the existing school demolition in the Construction and Demolition Waste Management credit.

However, the existing school is mostly contaminated with asbestos (approximately 50% or more). As mentioned in the guide, hazardous materials will be excluded from calculations. But should we still include the rest of the uncontaminated materials in the calculations, even though the process of removing asbestos and separating the contaminated materials from the uncontaminated materials can be very complicated and costly? And is there a way or a specific scenario where it would be possible to exclude the existing school from the Construction and Demolition Waste Management credit?
