Dedicated exhaust system

Hi Can someone please explain what exactly is meant by a dedicated exhaust system? Also - are the self closing doors a requirement or an option? (The reference guide sais this is optional). Thanks

I'll let Dylan confirm, but here is how I have always interpreted these requirements: 1. Dedicated exhaust goes directly outside with no opportunity for recirculation. It's ok to be on same exhaust run as toilets. 2. I've always considered self-closing doors as a requirement. There used to be a checkbox on the form. Since it's not there in the 2009 form, and if the reference guide says it's optional, I would go with that, as long as you can document separation and the pressure differential.

Michelle and Dylan, I need a followup on the self closing door issue. I don't read the reference manual as saying that they are optional. There is a statement about a self closing door being an optional approach to a particular situation of a large space with no doors, but it's not a general reference. Also on the LEED 2009 form though there isn't a checkbox, there are pull downs in the table that offer two options with self closing doors included and an "other". If we use the other option, compliance with EQcr5 is a No. So far I do not see an LI that supports self closing doors as optional. Perhaps I have missed an addendum? Please confirm that a regular door with appropriate deck to deck partition, pressure differential and no recirc. will comply with this credit.

I believe the self closing doors are required. We have gotten dinged on at least one project, so we always ask for it.

That is my experience as well.

Reviewers agree that self closing doors are required. The "other" on the form is only offered in the event that someone comes up with something innovative that actually complies. Thanks for the responses.
