Current language awards additional points for products that reduce their carbon footprint by 15% below the industry average. Furniture does not have an industry average. BIFMA is working with members and service providers to determine a path forward. Given the complexity of products and a review of current LCA and EPD practices, we anticipate a solution to be three-plus years away.

There are also no established Industry Averages for carpet and many other categories that lack an Industry-Wide EPD. LEED needs to learn from the mistakes of v4.0 and the failed EPD Optimization credit and establish a better approach than referring to data which don't and probably never will exist in EPDs.
