Bike storage for a hospital - regular building occupants count

Hello,

Can anyone help me clarify if for the bicycle storage calculation for a hospital, we should use the total of FTE (full time equivalents) or if we can use the peak reguar building occupants? I ask this given that there will be three work turns (day, evening and night, each of 8 hours), so the total FTE won't be in the building at the same time.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Carla, personnally I have always calculated the FTE for the busiest shift, maybe I was wrong all allong, but this seems to be in compliance with the intention of the certification.

Carla,  Hi.  I have a similar question with respect to a 3 shift,24-hour work schedule for Data Centers.  Hoping someone can help us.  I am trying to clarify the following issues:
  • The definition for "Regular Building Occupants" clearly denotes that it includes all employees expressed as FTEs, and (Case1) Bicycle Facilities Credit states "Provide long-term bicycle storage for at least 5% of all regular building occupants", however, in the case of buildings with 3 or more shifts, the entirety of the FTEs are never present on-site at the same time.  Can a case be made for providing long-term bicycle storage based upon the Peak number of FTEs including shift overlap?
  • The "Getting Started" pages of the Ref. Guide note two things that may be relevant:
    • Pg. 17 Under "Regular Building Occupants":  "For buildings with more unusual occupancy patterns, calculate the FTE building occupants based on a standard eight-hour period".  This does not seem to address situations with 24-operations and/or shift overlap.
    • Pg. 18 with respect to Occupant types:  "Daily averages take into account all the occupants of a given type for a typical 24-hour day of operation".  This clearly acknowledges multi-shift operations, but the Bicycle Facilities Credit is requesting calculations against "Regular Building Occupants".  Has anyone encountered a similar situation and which values have you used to calculate requirements in this credit?
