Does anyone know of any equivalents for BIFMA e3 or level that are available in Europe? We have found that most products comply with Blue Angel and EU Ecolabel, which are not accepted under LEED for furniture. The European Federation for Office Furniture (FEMB) has their own "Level" sustainability standard that covers a lot of the same things as ANSI/BIFMA 7.6.1 and 7.6.2 but they are not exactly the same https://www.levelcertified.eu/about-level/.

The FEMB standard (for FEMB LEVEL certification) is the equivalent in Europe to the BIFMA e3 standard (for BIFMA LEVEL certification). EU regulations are more strict and you can likely guarantee that products passing the similar credits in the FEMB standard meet the criteria of the credits in the BIFMA e3 standard (for BIFMA LEVEL certification). Blauer Angel and EU Ecolabel are the most common certifications for meeting the EU emissions limit criteria. It might be useful to reach out to FEMB directly and ask them to assess this and issue a formal statement, there is a "Contact" button on this page - https://www.levelcertified.eu/

Are BIFMA e3 level certificates for products recognized as viable certififcates outside of NAM? What is the equivalent for APAC and also Europe? I have been referenceing the EU Ecolabel in Europe but nothing for APAC seems to be noted. Thank you

There is a downloadable spreadsheet in LEED Online under LEEDv4 for Low-Emitting Materials that is helpful guide which includes options and International Equivalents. Low Emitting Third Party Certifications and Labels July 2022.pdf (usgbc.org)
Intertek Clean Air Gold
MAS Certified Green
SCS Indoor Advantage Gold—Furniture
UL Greenguard Gold
Finnish Emission Classification of Building Materials
TÜV Rheinland Green Product Mark Furniture
Hope this is helpful.

Thank you Linda. I don't see LEVEL listed even in the NAM certificates so great info but I will leave the query to anyone specifically available to offer a BIFMA e3 Level equivalent in APAC.

Trying to understand what you need this for, I am not a LEED practitioner but a LEVEL auditor for both BIFMA (NA) and FEMB (EU) schemes. Are you asking if LEVEL certificates are viable for demonstrating conformance to low emitting furniture requirements? Not necessarily. If this is for LEED criteria than the standards/certifications that Linda listed are your options. LEVEL certification is a multi-attribute sustainable product certification (LEVEL is to office/institutional furniture as LEED is to buildings), low-emitting furniture (prerequisite 7.6.1) tested according ANS/BIFMA M7.1/X7.1 standards is just one of the critieria that must be met to be approved for LEVEL certification. There are advanced points for emissions testing (7.6.2, 7.6.3) that are optional credits. As mentioned in a previous comment, my understanding is that Blue Angel and EU Ecolabel certifications (these are for emissions testing), follow requirements for EU regulations, I am unaware of anything similar for AP.

Thank you and I appreciate the help. Black and white, a client is asking if our BIFMA Level 3 certificates for furniture are acceptable in Asia for a LEED project. I don't believe they convey outside of NAM. What would be the right resource for developing a LEVEL equivalent in Asia. I now understand that FEMB would be the answer for EU. Helpful for certain.

If this is to show that a product meets emissions crtieria, I would assume that your Indoor Advantage certficates would demonstrate conformance to that criteria, unless LEED requirements in ASIA are different than they are in the US/Canada. I have no idea what organization in Asia would develop their own standard, we receive many requests for BIFMA LEVEL certification from companies in Asia and there are two new certfifcation bodies there that have been accredited to perform LEVEL certification assessments. If you want to reach out directly, David or Farjad can provide you with my contact information.
