Automatic lighting control in student rooms

How does ASHRAE 90.1-1010 apply to a university residence hall student room?  In the past, we have not included automatic control due to potentially different activity patterns of the 2 room occupants - one sleeping/other studying, etc.  Does 90.1-2010 require automatic control or does the exemption of "endanger the safety or security of the room or building occupant" apply?

I think that this would be except as a 24 hour operation. Residential occupancies are typically considered a 24 hour operation.

Hi,   in what relates with the HVAC operation of a hotel room, shall we consider that HVAC (including ventilation) works 24 hours/day?   Regards,

Yes that would be the standard assumption. A hotel room certainly has the potential to be occupied 24 h/d and when it is occupied the HVAC should be operating.

Marcus, 1 - Does this mean that it is acceptable to consider in the energy simulation the lighting system always on (24h/day) in hotel rooms? 2 - Regarding the occupancy rate in the hotel rooms (exemple, annual ocupancy expected to be 75%), shall we adjust the profiles (lighting, occupancy, equipments) to the occupancy? Or shall we considered the building permanently occupied (24h day)? Thank you in advance!

1. No I don't think that is a good assumption. In most hotels I visit the lights are not let on all the time. They are usually only on 2-3 hours per day at most. 2. It is a good assumption that the lighting and some of the equipment goes along with the occupancy (a refrigerator or clock would not of course). Again I don't think 24/7 occupancy is a good assumption. You should model the project based on the expected occupancy, lighting and equipment run time, etc. for this project or use default schedules for a hotel. Check 90.1 User's Manual and/or COMcheck for default schedules.
