I am working on a project locating on a commercial corridor of a capital city. Per the MLO lighting zone, my project should be in Lighting Zone 3 since MLO allows only a case like New York’s Time Square to be Lighting Zone 4. However, ASHRAE 90.1-2010 describes Lighting Zone 4 as ‘High activity commercial districts in major metropolitan areas as designated by the local jurisdiction.’ Our project site is in Highly Dense Commercial area per the local zoning map. Can we use exterior lighting power allowance for ASHRAE 90.1-2010’s Lighting Zone 4?

Hi, Marcus. Model Lighting Ordinance (MLO) is referred for lighting zones in SS Light Pollution Reduction.

There needs to be consistency between credits. If you can make the case that your area is LZ4 under the Light Pollution Reduction credit then you can use it for Minimum Energy Performance. Ironically if you did not pursue the Light Pollution Reduction credit you could probably use LZ4 for Minimum Energy Performance since the ASHRAE Standard does not make this distinction. Did you check the 90.1-2010 User's Manual to see if they do make this distinction?

Hello Nuttanee,
Did you already recieve an answer from USGBC or others? We are in the same case and we need to know if i must choice the same zoning lighting for MLO and for Mandatory provisions of ASHRAE 90.1 (Exterior lighting).
I will appreciate your return,
Many thanks,

Hi Sara,
We already completed the Design Submission using Lighting Zone 3 for both Lighting Pollution Reduction and Minimum Energy Performance.
