I read and understand the USGBC guidance regarding the selection of bike racks, that “Bicycle racks should reflect best practices in design and installation. For example, the rack should support the bicycle in at least two places, to keep it from falling over, and allow the owner to lock both the bicycle frame and one or both wheels with a U-lock. The rack must be securely anchored and resistant to cutting, rusting, bending, and other deformation.” But does anyone have an example of an approved bike rack? Is a standard U rack with plate anchors and embedded mounting (under cover of course) acceptable? What about a similarly installed post and ring rack? Thanks!

Answering my own question here, the following is a response from the project's LEED Coach: Although the actual review of the proposed equipment would happen during the certification process, the racks you describe are reasonable because they allow locking the bicycle frame rather than supporting the bicycle only from the wheel, which makes it hard/impossible to lock with a U-Lock. The guidance is somewhat general, in part to leave some room for the team's discretion.

We recently asked this same question to our project's GBCI reviewers, their response was "yes, wheel bender racks (i.e. U-rack) are structured such that the wheel and a portion of the frame can be secured."
They 'unofficially' mentioned that they need this type of language in the reference guide so that project teams do not claim bollards, stop signs, door knobs, etc. as 'bike racks". If the design intent of the bike storage device is in fact a Bike Rack, then I suspect the GBCI will allow them to contribute to credit compliance.

Can double-stacked bike storage racks comply with this credit?

According to LEED v4.1, you can use the following guidelines for preferable bike storage strategies : "Essentials of Bike Parking: Selecting and Installing Bike Parking that Works"
