Intent

To give design teams who are using Option 3 to meet the Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite the option to use New Buildings Institute’s updated prescriptive guide, The Advanced Buildings New Construction Guide, to meet this requirement. This Guide has replaced the Core Performance guide which is currently referenced in this section of LEED v4.

Requirements

Minimum Energy Performance Prerequisite:

Projects using Option 3 to meet the Minimum Energy Performance Prerequisite can either use the already listed Advanced Buildings Core Performance Guide or the equivalent option in the New Construction Guide to meet this requirement.

Optimize Energy Performance Credit
Option 3. Prescriptive Compliance: Advanced Buildings New Construction Guide (4-10 points)

To be eligible for Option 3, projects must comply with the New Construction Guide’s Section 0: Design Process Strategies.

Projects can achieve 4 points by complying with the requirements of Section Two: Tier 2 of the New Construction Guide and can achieve up to 2 additional points by implementing Tier 2 Enhanced Strategies (1 point for any three Tier 2 Enhanced Strategies).

Projects seeking a higher level of performance can earn 8 points by meeting the requirements of Section Three: Tier 3 in the New Construction Guide (excluding Tier 3.7 Radiant Heating/Cooling) and can achieve up to 2 additional points by implementing additional Tier 3 measures (1 point for any one Tier 3 measure).

Minimum Energy Performance Prerequisite:

Comply with the mandatory and prescriptive provisions of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2010, with errata (or USGBC approved equivalent standard for projects outside the U.S.).

Comply with Core Performance Guide’s Section 1: Design Process Strategies, Section 2: Core Performance Requirements and the following three strategies from Section 3: Enhanced Performance Strategies, as applicable.

  • 3.5 Supply Air Temperature Reset (VAV)
  • 3.9 Premium Economizer Performance
  • 3.10 Variable Speed Control

Or comply with New Construction Guide’s Section 0: Design Process Strategies, Section 1: Tier 1 Requirements plus any two Additional Efficiency Package Options in Tier 1.14 or any two strategies from Section 2: Tier 2, as applicable.

Where standards conflict, follow the more stringent of the two. For projects outside the U.S., consult ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2010, Appendixes B and D, to determine the appropriate climate zone.

To be eligible for Option 3, the project must be less than 100,000 square feet (9,290 square meters).

Note: Healthcare, Warehouse or Laboratory projects are ineligible for Option 3.
