If your project will be organizing a carpooling program, finalize the program details and infrastructure, including any literature, brochures, newsletters and other materials that inform school staff, students, and parents about carpooling and its benefits.
Ensure that you meet the minimum parking capacity following your credit option. If applicable, verify that preferred parking spaces are included in your plans and in your total parking count.
Verify that the number of required parking spaces were calculated by using the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) “Parking Generation” study. (See Resources.) Be sure to use the 2003 edition, as it includes significant changes from the 1987 study.
If you haven’t already checked the local zoning requirements, check them to make sure that the parking capacity you’re intending to offer meets but does not exceed minimum requirements. Plan on providing preferred parking for carpools or vanpools for 5% of the total parking spaces.
If there is no minimum parking requirement for zoning (and only a maximum or no limits at all), refer to the 2003 Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) study entitled “Parking Generation” (see Resources). Determine the type of education facility, the recommended parking capacity based on education facility type (either per student or per employee), and provide 25% less parking spaces than recommended in the study.
