Determine if anti-icing practices are in place at your project building or if your vendor is willing to adopt such practices. Consider the following tips.
- Anti-icing is a proactive approach focusing on applying a small amount of liquid or pre-wet deicer before a storm, preventing snow and ice from bonding to the pavement.
- Pretreated or pre-wet materials are not as efficient as liquids for anti-icing; you need more material and they don’t track as well. They will work if applied at very low application rates immediately before the snow event.
- It is better to use less than more. Over-application can cause slippery conditions because the wet deicer can form a slick coating on the ground.
- Anti-icing is often effective for heavy frosts as well as snow.
- Anti-icing works best when combined with accurate weather information, so that you know when to apply chemicals, and to what extent.
