Rob Moody’s Biography
Rob is a nationally known speaker, consultant and instructor in sustainability and green building. He works with his wife, Lindsay, at Organic Think Inc, a green consultation and education firm.
Rob has been working closely with the USGBC on consultation and education projects. Rob is a LEED Accredited Professional® Homes and a licensed LEED® Faculty™ member, conducting USGBC education programs nationally as an advocate for green market transformation. He is also working on curriculum development for the USGBC’s homes and renovation programs. He is a frequent contributor to Fine HomeBuilding magazine and GreenBuildingAdvisor.com, writing blogs, articles and creating video blogs. Rob will soon be working with the Clinton Foundation on weatherization, green building and energy efficiency training in Arkansas.
Rob’s career has been spent in three phases thus far: high school science teacher, green builder and green consultant and educator. Sustainability has been the consistent theme with each profession. From an early age, Rob had a keen interest in the environment, and earned a degree in biology focusing on vertebrate ecology (namely salamanders) at UNC Asheville.
Just out of college Rob taught Biology and Environmental Science in the North Carolina public high school system for seven years. Between school terms, he led ecology research teams at Upward Bound Math and Science at Western Carolina University, coaching first generation college bound students in life skills and scientific research.
Rob grew up in his 1906 Arts and Crafts family home which was an important element in his development. While teaching, Rob worked on improving the systems and restoring the historic architectural fabric of the home. Mainly self taught in carpentry and home improvement, he began doing historic renovation projects for other people.
Rob’s underlying love for his family home and long standing commitment to the environment manifested into his next career. After teaching, Rob and Lindsay founded The EcoBuilders Inc, an Asheville NC based residential green building company. The EcoBuilders first new construction project was the first North Carolina HealthyBuilt Home certified in the state. 100% of their homes were certified third-party, green and Energy Star, including two LEED for Homes projects. Several of Rob’s homes were local award winners. EcoBuilders projects and techniques were published in national periodicals including This Old House Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times and Southern Living Magazine. The EcoBuilders built the 2008 North Carolina Southern Living Idea House achieving LEED for Homes Gold certification. While building, Rob served as the President of the Western North Carolina Green Building Council and as a commissioner with the local municipality’s Historic Resources Commission.
Just as Rob’s green building profession combined his past of biology with his love for quality architecture, his education and green building experience has combined into his latest career as a green consultant and educator.
In 2008, Rob was a green consultant for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in New Orleans (LEED for Homes Platinum certified, first in Louisiana). Continuing recovery efforts in New Orleans, Rob worked to develop green renovation guidelines for the NOLA100 Project. NOLA 100 was a partnership between the US Green Building Council, Hope Has A Face Foundation, the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Salvation Army working to rebuild Hurricane Katrina ravaged homes in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. He also worked as a consultant to other Extreme Makeover: Home Edition green projects.
Channeling his education experience and passion, Rob has been teaching and speaking about green building nationally at events including USGBC’s GreenBuild, NAHB Green Building Conference and the International Builders Show. He has also contributed to HGTVPro and Newsweek On Air.
