John began energy consulting work in the 1990s when he served as the Energy Star Program Manager for a design/build mechanical contracting firm. Since then, John has performed property assessment surveys and energy audits in over 53 facilities totaling more than 19.2 million square feet. These facilities included multi-family high-rise apartment buildings, large scale shopping malls, and mid to high-rise office buildings. Surveys focused on reviewing the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for operational issues, future repairs or replacement, and energy efficiency improvements.
He has been actively involved in the LEED rating systems since 2001 when he served as the LEED consultant and commissioning authority on The Southern Pines Conference Center project that earned a certified rating. Since then he has acted as the LEED consultant over 30 projects in every LEED rating system except LEED for Homes. He continues to strengthen his close ties with the USGBC as a member of LEED faculty as well as serving as the Vice-Chair of the USGBC Indoor Environmental Technical Advisory Group.
He also has developed a free commissioning training and educational program available through the Southface Energy Institute website. Additionally, Mr. McFarland is the Vice-Chair of the ASHRAE SSPC 62.1 Committee charged with maintaining ASHRAE Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality and a Past President of the Atlanta Chapter of ASHRAE.
